I have now finished my student magazine. I will now be concentrating on researching music magazines to get an idea of what people want from that genre.

Evaluation

My student magazine contains many features which resemble magazines design for young people. On the front cover, it is important to include many photos to draw the reader in, also this gives them an idea of what to expect in the magazine. In my magazine I have used various photos of teenagers at college having a good time. This helps the reader to reflect on the magazine and tells them that they will enjoy reading it.
In general, student magazines normally have coverlines with aspects that lure the reader in. However I chose not to include this in my own magazine; instead I put my lure in the banner that stretches across the page because this is the first thing the reader sees when they look at the magazine. Also I put in a strapline however I moved it further down the page so that the white font stood out on the black background. My strapline is similar to those in a student magazine because it gives the reader information about what's inside.
It is important to catch the reader's attention straight away. The colours need to be bold and colourful. If your magazine is aimed at females, the colours should be more pastel and maybe tones of pink, purple and blue. On the other hand if the magazine is aimed at males then the colours are darker possibly reds, blues and greens. For my student magazine, it is aimed at both genders so my colour scheme needs to appeal to both.

My student magazine doesn't specifically represent any social groups. It represents teenagers who want to have fun whilst learning this is shown through photos of students laughing and smiling. None of the photos are negative in any way, for example of a student smoking. They show friendship and togetherness. The magazine includes articles which are both educational, informative and entertaining. The language I have used is informal because this represents how teenagers talk to their friends. For example in the regular section of the contents there is a page labeled "WIN!" suggesting that this has been shouted. I think the name of my magazine will draw in young readers because it is similar to Facebook Poke which the majority of students use.

My magazine will be distributed by the college and funded by the college council.

My targeted audience is students at college aged between 16-18 who enjoy reading about the latest events and also interesting articles that are both educational and entertaining. The reader might also be someone who wants to support college funds by paying a small contribution for the magazine.

The colours I have decided on for my student magazine are orange, blue, red and black. These colours are effective colours because they stand out and would be eye catching amongst other magazines. Photos I have included illustrate college life outside the classroom. They show students having fun and enjoying college. This shows that the magazine will be full of interesting articles which will be enjoyable to read. I decided to include a variety of photos because from my feedback, this is what students liked best; therefore they will be attracted most to my magazine in comparison to others. On the cover I have also used language to attract the reader. For example the word "revealed" suggests the reader is about to be informed something secretive. They have to buy the magazine to find out what it is. In addition in the contents page I have used a rhetorical question, "looking to go traveling?" this makes the reader question themselves and it also tells them that the answer to this question is hidden within the magazine.

Software i have used to produce this magazine cover is Microsoft Publisher. This enabled me to create coloured text for my headline. Also border my photos and slant them to the side. This software enabled me to perform simple effects on my pictures and use basic shapes as a background image.

Contents Page... Final Designs

This first image is my second design for the contents page. I wanted to carry on the same colour scheme before so I chose the black spiked shape to border the orange font.

I also wanted a different coloured background for the list of articles, so that they were clearer to read. Therefore I chose white because this contrasts against the light blue.
When looking at different examples of magazine contents, I noticed how they included a variety of photos which were related to the articles. So I decided to use my own photos to break up the text and make it more visually pleasing.

This is my final design for my contents page. I thought that having the word 'Contents' in a bigger font was more important than the magazine name to make it more obvious what the page was.
Also I noticed that many magazines effectively broke up the text with blocks of colour, so I tried out dividing my contents list with subtitles.

Contents

Now that I am ahead of my schedule, I've decided to start design my contents page. When looking back at my completed front cover, I need to keep to the colour scheme therefore I am sticking to blue, orange and black so that the colours don't clash with the front page. I will now have to think up names of possible articles to include in my magazine.

Last Week Review

The image to the left is my final design for my student magazine. The colours I have decided on are orange, blue, maroon and black. I really like these colours because they stand out and would be eye catching amongst other magazines. Photos I have included illustrate college life outside the classroom. They show students having fun and enjoying college. I decided to include a variety of photos because from my feedback, this is what students liked best. I have met all my specifications and am ahead of schedule. Please comment below with your suggestions of how I might improve my magazine. Also what you like and dislike. Would you buy this magazine if you saw it for sale? Thanks :)

Magazine Design Cover

This is my first magazine cover design. I have decided to use a few basic colours to break the page up and so that it is clearer to veiw. The name of the magazine is the main attraction of the piece because the white contrasts against the dark blue. Furthermore I have included the issue number and price directly beneath the masthead. I have also included a space which will be a midshot of a student. This will be layered with a banner as the main lure. I will also include exciting photos at the bottom of the page which relate to the articles inside.

The image to the right is my second design. I have used a basic white background which will be cheaper to print and also doesnot distract the reader. In this design I have included a strapline so that the reader knows what area of topics will be in the magazine. In this design I have used an orange masthead because this is bright and colourful. this has been contrasted with the blue banner. In this design I decided to use photos releated to the article displayed in a layered look as this looks fun and represents a wide area of student's lifestyles.

In this design I have decided to carry on the layered look because I thought it worked really well in the second design. However I chose not to make thi the main focus of the page. Instead I have kept the midshot of the student as the centre of focus so that the cover doesn't look too busy. Colours I have chosen are yellow, orange and blue. I like these colours because they are bright and stand out amoungst other magazines. As part of the background I have chosen to use a yellow jagged shape as tis looks explosive and exciting.

This Week review

This week I have managed to complete most of my aims in the first week of my action plan. I have completed a questionnaire which will help me when designing the front page because I will have a greater knowledge of what students like. I have also completed a textual analyse of First Car which has helped me learn the techniques of drawing readers in. I have decided to call my magazine College Poke because it is fun and quirky. I have also started to design some magazine covers which puts me ahead of my action plan.

Questionnaire

1) What do you look for in a magazine?

2) Do you prefer more photos than text or more text than photos?

3) What sort of colour scheme are you most attracted to?

4) What is the most you're willing to pay or a student magazine?

5) Which topic are you most interested in reading about?

Please answer the questionnaire and post it as a comment, thanks.

Textual Analysis of 'First Car'

I have begun looking at various magazines aimed at students. I have decided to analyse a magazine called 'First Car' because most students are at the stage of learning to drive.

The colour scheme is made up of a limited palette of white and yellow edged in black. The bright colours contrast against the dark background which is attention grabbing and pulls the reader in. The headline is the biggest and clearest font, which is important so that the reader can recognise the name of the magazine if they were to read it again.

Words such as 'Killer' create a sense of excitement because an element of danger is involved. These words are then accompanied by photos of car crashes and vehicles driven at a fast pace.

Students are also attracted to the photos of the actors from The Inbetweeners. This is a comedy popular amongst teenagers so if the reader isn't interested in cars, they may still want to read the interview inside. The midshot of the main character is the first image you see, showing what age group the magazine is aimed at.

Action Plan

The task is to design the front cover and contents of a student magazine. The requirements are for the page to appeal to my targeted audience which means eye-catching font and a variety of attention grabbing photos.

I have summed up my action plan in the following:
Week 1) -Decide on a name/style/colour scheme
- Research and plan the pages
- Questionnaire
- Textual analysis of existing magazines
- Mock designs

Week 2) -Start designing
- Photo shoot

Week 3) - Continue designing
- Complete first draft of pages and get feedback
- Adapt pages according to feedback

Week 4) - Finish pages and evaluate
- Make sure everything is complete
- Answer evaluation questions on blog

Depending on how fast I work, I may adapt my action plan as I venture through the perilous journey that is media.
